YMCA awesome lifeguards

Hi everyone.  So, on Thursday we had swimming training and we just learnt how to do fingers , kicking on our backs and rotation. We did all of our drills and we had to do 6 lengths without stopping as a warm up.

Here is a photo of the whole Triathlon Squad (except for Collin) that Miss Tito took of us with some of the AWESOME YMCA staff, who watch over us while we train.  You guys rock!

Collin's swimming goals

On Tuesday the triathlon squad went with Ms Tito to the Whare Fono to watch ourselves swimming (GoPro footage), so that we could see how we swim and what we needed to work on.

While we were watching the video we had to write down the things we needed to work on. I need to work on keeping my legs straight when kicking and entering my arms in the water at 10 and 2. Another thing I have to do more of is controlling breathing. Sometimes I really find it hard to breath out into the water and blow out through my nose.

For swimming we train on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I think that training is very important for exercise and practice. When we train for swimming practise until we are perfect.  We practise things like different kinds of techniques and how long we can swim. If we’re lucky we’ll get some free time to play and have breathing competitions.

Anyway, I am really enjoying training with the team and Ms Tito is really kind.   I can’t wait until we go to Napier.

Quinlan's swim training.

Last Thursday we did swim training for IronMāori. I think it was really challenging but also really fun. The Challenge was that we had to swim 6 lengths without stopping. I could swim 6 lengths but after the 6 lengths my legs were killing me but it was really good for me.

Miss Tito was filming us with the GoPro just to see what our technique looks like and how good we swim. Later on we just did some normal swimming drills like fingers, 6 kick rotation, and side kick breathe drills. We also wore cool swimming caps they said IronMāori on them I really liked the pink one.

Before we hopped out of the pool to get changed, Miss Tito gave us a fun challenge. The challenge was that we had to put a kick board between our legs and then we had to hold on to each other’s ankles and stay like that and try to go to the other side of the pool staying connected. We had to be like a snake it was funny how the boards keep slipping out and popped out into the air.

It was another fun training.

Practising our swimming techniques.

Our Tri Squad have been practising their swimming techniques.  I thought it would be a great idea to film them so we can take at look at what they are doing in the water.

We'll sit down next week and take a look at their technique and set individual goals for our next few swimming sessions.

Feel free to comment and give the students feedback if you are a swim coach, we value your input :)

My first spin class - Tyli

Photo taken at YMCA Leisure centre - Glen Innes

On Wednesday it was my first spin bike training at the gym.

Before training started we had to set up our bikes.  Ms Tito helped me and showed me what to do for next time.  I was so glad that I had brought my water bottle and sweat towel because I was sweating like a pig.

For our warm up I started slow and was at Level One doing my own pace for 6 minutes.  Once we were warmed up we went into the real thing.  We had to put the level up and cycle 100 rpms which is really fast and we were slowly building up time spent in each level.  It was really fun at the start but then it got so tiring that I started feeling knackered, but I wanted to push myself harder.

After the bike training, I almost fell down the stairs.  It was funny because my muscles felt like jelly.

I really enjoyed my bike training and I can't wait for the next session and the triathlon later on this year.
